Access to primary education is limited to the local Muslim population mainly because of cultural and economic motives.   On one hand the mixed public schools are not very well attended, which means that boys have priority, in order to access these types of schools.  On the other hand the families cannot afford to pay for the education of all their members. This means that most of the girls take on domestic tasks from a very early age.

For the same reason the rate of illiteracy in adult women is very high according to PNUD sources only 29.5% of adult women over the age of 15 years, know how to read and write.  Nowadays young girls as well as women know the importance of education and are highly motivated to learn.
